All three major US indices closed at records as a new wave of AI chip optimism powered the technology sector, shrugging off rising oil prices and geopolitical noise.
US equities pressed to fresh records, with the S&P 500 closing at 7,599.96 and the Nasdaq Composite at 27,086.81 — both all-time highs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also notched a record, underscoring the breadth behind the latest leg higher.
AI silicon does the heavy lifting
The immediate catalyst was a fresh wave of AI optimism, led by a new Nvidia PC AI chip that reignited enthusiasm across the semiconductor and large-cap technology complex. Continued corporate AI spending has remained the market's most durable growth narrative, and the latest product cycle gave bulls another reason to add exposure.
Climbing a wall of worry
Notably, the rally advanced despite genuine headwinds. Rising oil prices, with WTI trading near $92 a barrel, and renewed geopolitical tension in the Middle East might ordinarily have weighed on sentiment. Instead, megacap leadership and resilient earnings expectations kept indices bid.
The risk for traders is concentration. With leadership narrow and valuations rich, the indices are increasingly sensitive to any disappointment from the AI bellwethers. For now, momentum favours the bulls, but position sizing and stop discipline matter more than ever at record highs.
